Not too long ago, we posted a blog post detailing the animals that make up the “African Big Five”: the African elephant, the cape buffalo, the lion, the leopard, and the rhinoceros. We wanted to understand how these animals’ populations were faring after seeing them on safari in 2010, and what kinds of threats they were under. Sadly, we found that most of the African Big Five were under serious threats, and most had declining populations. However, for the most direly threatened species, the black rhinoceros, we discovered that they were also experiencing the most conservation success. Their numbers are increasing, and as we discovered in this National Geographic article, black rhinos are being returned to their old habitats.
